Chapter 4 : The memory function

Exercises

Proposal 3 - Handling words

  1. Try the game of finding as many words as you can starting by a syllable chosen at random.

    For example :

Words starting with “dan” or “sol” or “ant”.

    Any syllable will do.
  2. Find as many words as you can and then check the dictionary to find words you know, but did not come spontaneously to mind. Do the same exercise the next day, adding the words you did not find the day before.

  3. Proverbs and popular images using an animal to illustrate a human trait.

    For example :

      Stubborn as a …

      Cunning as...… a fox

      Tricky as ……...a monkey

      Brave as ………a lion

There are actually hundreds of common expressions like this.
    (List on request!)

  • Proverbs and popular sayings using a part of the human body to describe a familiar situation :
    • to have one’s head screwed on, to pull someone’s leg,
    • to have a long arm,
    • to have no stomach for a fight…

  • There are also proverbs using items of clothing to describe a familiar situation:
    • to lose one’s shirt, to wear two hats,
    • to be too big for one’s boots.
  • Dictionaries sometimes give long lists of these expressions. It is preferable to let your memory work for some time before looking up the solutions. Some people have systems to achieve this : they take animals in alphabetical order to think of images. Others are more like butterflies and jump from image to image. It is quite interesting to watch one’s mind working. It shows us how we usually function.

  • More methods to restore the fluidity of memory will be proposed. Familiarising yourself with those proposed above will help make up a lot of the lost ground.
  • And what fun !
