Chapter 3 : Biology of memory

Exercises : Text

Here is a lovely text

A Hindu legend told so as to be remembered easily. Read it once, twice, note the logical order of situations, then try to repeat it word for word if you can:

An old Hindu legend tells of a time when all men were gods. But they abused their divinity so much that Brahma, the master of the gods, decided to deprive them of their divine power and hide it in a place where it would be impossible for them to find. So the great problem was to find a hiding place.

When the lesser gods were called in to solve the problem, they proposed this: “Let us bury man’s divinity in the earth.” But Brahma replied: “No, that is not enough, because men will dig it up.”

So the gods responded, saying “In that case, throw divinity in the deepest ocean.”

But Brahma again replied: “No, because sooner or later man will explore the depths of all the seas, and one day he is sure to find it and bring it up to the surface.”

So the lesser gods concluded : “We don’t know where to hide it because there does not seem to be a place on land or sea which man cannot reach one day.”

Then Brahma said: “Here is what we will do with man’s divinity: we will hide it deep within him, because that is the only place where he will never think of looking for it.”

Since then, the legend says, man has been around the world, he has explored, climbed, dived and dug to find something that is inside him.
