Chapter 1 : One or several memories

Presentation

- - - - - - Our memory involves our whole being

To function, our memory normally uses our whole being : our mind, of course, but also our body and our heart

Memory problems can have a number of causes.

These can be grouped around three categories : biological, psychological, environmental :

  • Biological : everything related to health has a major effect on memory : poor sight or poor hearing hinder memorisation.

    • Being tired, anaemic, sleeping badly, all these bodily failings interfere with mental functions. Some illnesses affect the entire brain function, like Alzheimer’s.
    • Shock following accidents or violent sports, anaesthetics, or even comas.
  • Psychological : “morale” is particularly important for memorising and for retrieving memories. Breakdowns can occur after :

    • Violent upheavals in one’s life : deaths and accidents,
depression causing a loss of mental energy, loss of the urge to keep fighting, distraction, lack of concentration.

    • Loss of interest, lack of motivation.

  • Environmental : everything “surrounding” your everyday life plays a major role and can cause difficulties in the functioning of our memory : More or less sudden changes in our family life, conflicts, moving house, illnesses…

    • Changes in our working life, tension in the neighbourhood, at work, at school or at Uni.

    • Time spent job hunting or on unemployment when people feel lonely and useless.

    • Isolation, lack of friends, of groups to share and help regain energy after accidents… or even illnesses which keep us in bed or inactive for extended periods.

There are many causes which, by creating an internal imbalance, prevent the memory from working freely.

Rather than worry about our memory, we have to deal with this difficult period in our lives.
